This past Thursday June 21, 2012 Sandra Bernhard performed her first of what was to be 5 shows at the Triple Door Theater in Seattle. The show is called "I love being me, don't you?" The title refers to the overwhelming number of people that create Facebook and Twitter posts about the most mundane things in their life seeking some way to fill a void that most don't even realize exists. I myself and very guilty of this, constantly seeking attention via social media. In fact, as soon as I am done posting this blog I am going to post a link on my Facebook page even though I have already shared the photos there (thanks for coming by the way :) Shameless I know but it's what I do. It's probably what you do too.

I had set up early in the morning and was shooting portraits for work with the same setup I was using for Sandra so I had a good idea of what I would be getting once she arrived. It was essential I be prepared to pick up my camera and fire fast so she could get in and out. I had promised her Manager the longest part of the shoot would be to make it 5 floors up the elevator to the room I had set up and that I would take no more than 3 or 4 photos and be done.

Sandra arrived at around 4pm and proceeded to sound check. The rehearsal took longer than I had thought it would so I was getting nervous it wouldn't happen. She was set to go on stage at 7:30 and after several hours of waiting on standby her Manager came and got me at 7:15 after she had put on a gorgeous dress that was to be a focal point of her show in just a few short minutes. The pressure was on! I was more determined than ever to be quick and efficient. We got to my faux studio which was basically a glorified hotel room where I had haphazardly moved furniture around to create an open space large enough to hold my lights. I was using 3 Elinchrome D Lights, a couple of 8 inch reflectors, a huge Octobank and a Profoto ringflash. My models earlier in the day had commented a lot that the ringflash was pretty intense on the eyes so I was nervous it would bother Sandra right before the show. On the contrary, when I gave her the disclaimer that the bare bulb was intense she knew the light well and told me to light it up! She stood in position and immediately gave me an awesome look, I fired 3 shots and said "OK, were good." She looked at me as though I were from the Moon Titan. "Screw that, we're taking some pictures!" she said. My heart skipped a beat! I had remembered seeing her HBO special Sandra after Dark in the early 90s. On that show she had Tom Jones as a guest so I was playing a Tom Jones CD on my daughter's boom box. It was a depressing song on at the time though so Sandra told me that I needed to change it. I fumbled around until I found the song She's a lady. "Turn it up!" she instructed and I obliged.

She proceeded to dance and sing for the camera for then next 5 minutes and I was firing my new 5D Mark III away pushing the battery pack for the ringflash to the limit. She has a way of being sexy, seductive, cool, fun, intense and funny all at the exact same time. I don't think I have interacted with anyone like her in my life. The song ended, the shoot ended, we gave each other a high 5 (I was wayyy to sweaty for a hug...tmi?) and we walked back to the venue.

I met up with my beautiful Bride and we rushed into the venue where we had front row seats so I could fire off some shots of her show. The show was hilarious. She had myself and the rest of the audience cracking up from start to finish with her stories (my favorite was about the plumber). Her mannerisms, wit and voice made the show extremely entertaining. Her wardrobe change near the end of the show made it even more..err, for lack of a better word...stimulating. Sandra Bernhard is about as awesome as it gets! Go see her show!
Two of the kindest people you will meet and it is so clear they are madly in love with each other. I was honored and thrilled when they asked me to shoot their wedding in Walla Walla on May 19, 2012.

I had never been to Walla Walla but have always wanted to visit. The wedding was the perfect opportunity. It is absolutely stunning out there. Endless hills along a long, windy highway covered with deep green Alfalfa set the backdrop for a peaceful town filled with some of the best wine created on the planet.

The wedding was as charming as I had ever seen. They had cut a large circle out of the tall grass adjacent to the vineyards at A'Maurice winery. The guests stood around the couple while they exchanged vows. Once the ceremony was done everyone headed back down to the winery where there was delicious wine, an amazing food truck responsible for creating the BEST hamburger I have ever had in my life! They had fun games at every table and on the grass. A giant Jenga game made of 2X4's was the biggest hit I think. Kite flying, hula hoops and good times abound. It was a perfect wedding day for a perfect couple. A small handful of pics are below. I've also created a slideshow that can be seen by clicking the link below as well as a link to the full gallery should you be interested in purchasing prints.
I've got lots of images to post on the blog so check back soon.

I simply couldn't wait to post the shots from Tuesday though. I can't think of a musician in the industry today that has more people buzzing in general than Gotye. If you haven't seen the video of his hit song Somebody that I used to know then you must have been living under a rock. I just checked the stats while typing this and saw that it has been viewed over 156 million times! I'm pretty sure that's a lot. That is even more than the bacon dog video on Youtube!

I must admit that other than the catchy hit song played on the radio over and over again I knew next to nothing about Gotye and absolutely nothing about Kimbra. Turns out I am the one that must have been living under a rock because Kimbra had a massive fan base and for great reason.

I was invited to shoot an End Session for KNDD before the sold out show at Showbox Sodo. It turned out that they did not want photos taken during the End Session as it was ultimately a sound check with a limited number of invited guests allowed to watch. My job was to shoot the meet and greet afterwards so once we were let into the venue I got to work setting up a softbox for a quick and simple shoot. I learned something at that time. It's really hard to set up a softbox and studio strobe in pitch black! I got it set up but really wasn't sure if I had my settings right as I didn't want to pop a strobe off in a dark venue during his performance. Immediately after he played a few songs for the lucky winners he came over to where I was. I had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised when he walked up to me with his hand outstretched and introduced himself to me as Wally. How can you not like a guy named Wally? It's impossible, he was instantly charming very gracious to allow me to snap a couple pics of him before meeting his fans. Once all the fan photos were done I asked if I could jump in to get a shot with him as well. You can see below that I chose to not do a standard photo. He was a very good sport about it and I think found me a bit odd to be honest. I can live with that. It's true.

I spoke with his Management and was ecstatic to be approved to shoot his show. It was kind of a bummer to not be allowed to shoot the sound check End session so this really boosted my spirits as the show itself proved to be really incredible.

The photo pit was designed for very skinny people which sadly, I am not. I squeeeeezed my way in and found the fans in the front row to be giddy with anticipation. Some I recognized from the meet and greet earlier in the day. Others had been camped out for a couple of hours to ensure a good spot in the packed house.

The show started with Kimbra as the opening artist. I think my jaw literally hit the floor as she was nothing short of stunning. Her beautiful smile and the twinkle in her eye made me a fan before I even heard her larger than life vocals. As she started to get in the groove of the show I realized that not only was she an amazing singer, she had some serious sass and swagger! I'm not sure I could put my finger on why but I was reminded a little bit of June Carter. Bottom line, I became a fan. I bought the EP she was selling at the venue for just $5 and learned that she has a CD coming out May 20. You can count on me buying it that day!

Next came Gotye. As I mentioned I had seen him during soundcheck with about 40 or 50 people watching so I figured I knew what to expect. It was quite a bit different with the venue stuffed to the max with around 2,000 screaming fans. The energy was intense! He hit the stage while a dramatic sunrise scene unfolded on the giant screen behind him. He started to hit his booming drums and the crowd became frenzied! I was standing about 2 feet away from him and once he started really laying into the drums I couldn't even see his hands moving they were going so fast. You can see in an image below that I shot at a fairly low shutter speed to accomadate for the dark lights how quickly his hands were flying. What impressed me was that looking at the entire series of images from that drum sequence, his head, upper arms and body barely moved. It was absolute and complete control and I found myself forgetting to take pictures as I was mesmerized by the performance. Watch a Gotye show and you will know immediately you are watching a musical genius. A vast array of diverse instruments, crazy sound effects and dramatic visual effects left me shaking my head in disbelief.

Gotye is the real deal. I strongly believe we are going to be seeing him around for a very long time. I for one am very excited about that.

I was reminded of my trip to East Africa for a second.

I've always known his music and can sing along to a pretty large number of his impressive list of hits but I never really appreciated the intensity and diversity until then. Whenever his video would hit the screen at the "restaurant" I worked for there was a server named Aisha that no matter where she was or what she was doing she would immediately scream at the top of her lungs "PAUL RODGERRRRRRRSSSS!" and she would run through the dining room whooping it up and singing along. I kid you not, once I saw her taking an order at a table when the video came on..she scared the crap out of her guests by instantly screaming in their face. It was awesome! Ever since, any time I hear a Paul Rodgers song or his name I instantly think of her. She now lives in Seattle with one of my favorite people on the planet Alex the Greek (who by no coincidence looks quite a bit like Paul Rodgers...hmmm) and is the lead singer of an all girl Soundgarden tribute band called Bleed Together. They are headlining at Neumo's on Monday 4/9 and you should go! I put a photo of them I shot a few weeks ago below in the photo gallery.

I digress...shooting for VerbicideMagazine.Com my features editor worked me onto the list of photographers for the Paul Rodgers show in Aberdeen at the BEAUTIFUL D&R Theater. His camp had written back and given me authorization to shoot the entire set which is very rare. They are considering using my photos for the Paul Rodgers web site which would be amazing! Shooting in Aberdeen on a stormy night is not as easy as it sounds. It took me the better part of 4 hours to get down there through rush hour traffic then another 2 and a half to get back. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The word epic is thrown around a lot these days and often it's an exaggeration. I can't think of a different word to describe this show though and I think it doesn't quite cover it.

Paul Rodgers epitomizes the word COOL! From the second he hit the stage until the end of the 2nd encore he was spinning his mic stand, jamming on the piano and blowing the crowds mind with intense, spot on perfect vocals for every one of his amazing songs. I shot over 1,900 photos that night and I would say that through 90% of the show I was singing along with him. So much fun! On lead guitar was one of the founding members of a band destined for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Heart Howard Leese. I had met him and several other members of Heart at the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle (photo below, I'm the bald fat guy with the long beard on the right :) Talk about a guitar legend! I would forget to shoot when he was playing as I was captivated by his breathtaking skill and awe inspiring stage presence.

The entire night was one I will not forget. If you get a chance to see Paul Rodgers perform you have got to do it!
They traveled to Seattle from Reykjavik, Iceland and I had the privilege of photographing a private show they performed for lucky contest winners for listeners of 107.7 The End at the Gibson show room. I got there pretty early to set up and the band was already there warming up with new Gibson guitars. The entire time they were laughing and teasing each other. It was very obvious they were enjoying themselves in the midst of an international tour and their enthusiasm was contagious. This band has just blown up on the scene. Their hit song Little Talks is super catchy and fun and seems to be on the radio constantly. They sounded fantastic live again with energy, fun and an authentic performance. After the show they took some time to meet their fans and get their photos taken with them. They were humble and nice, considerate and cool.

I had a box of finger puppet monsters in my car that I brought in hoping to convince one or two to wear one. When they saw the box the entire band surrounded me like trick or treaters on Halloween night. They filled all their fingers and played with them the entire time we did pics. They kept the batch and later my friend Iron Mike Savoia shot their sold out show at Showbox Sodo (his amazing pics from the show can be seen here: Mikes FB Gallery In Mike's photos you can see that they had decorated the stage with the little monsters. So fun! I hope to see them again soon and if you get the chance, you should too! Their new album: 'My Head is an Animal' is going to be released on April 3 and can be pre-ordered here: PREORDER
His voice is nothing short of amazing. His wit and charm on stage can't help but make you smile and the diversity of his music is overwhelming. He walked through the crowd and literally touched nearly every person in the theater making it a very personal event. His fans are..well, his fans are nuts! They were dancing, singing and just plain rockin out the entire time.

I rarely watch the reality tv shows...well, OK that's a lie. I watch them all. American Idol, Survivor, Amazing Race. I'm a dork, you know it, I know it. Why lie? That being said when The X Factor came on I said to my Wife there was no way we were going to add another show to our list to watch. I knew there had been auditions at Key Arena in Seattle though so we had to tune in and watch that.

The Seattle audition episode wasn't the classiest show I've ever seen. One man dropped his pants and started flapping his junk in front of the arena. The cameras showed parents rushing their children out of the venue in horror. Paula Abdul started to vomit. All in all, a classless introduction to the show that probably should have been left out in my opinion. That was all wiped away when LeRoy Bell performed with his silky vocals ensuring he would make it to the next round. I recognized his name and remembered he had been a regular at the Triple Door so of course we had to watch and see how he did with the rest of the season. He was placed in the "Over 30's" group with mentor Nicole Scherzingerthe former Pussycat Doll who quite honestly rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning of the season but by the time it was all said and done ended up being one of my favorites. The over 30's group in my opinion was by far the strongest of the four(Boys, Girls, Groups and the Old Fogies at 30+). Both LeRoy and Josh Krajcik were in my opinion the most talented on the show.

Without recapping the entire season I'll just say that we ended up watching it all. The only episode we missed happened to be the one LeRoy was booted from the show. He made the top 10 and I would like to think that is mostly due to the fact Lea and I voted for him countless times each week :)

So after all that it was a real privilege to get to shoot his first of two performances at the Triple Door Theater in Seattle this past Thursday night. I got to meet him briefly back stage and he was just as nice as you would think. On stage he teased a bit about the show asking how many people in the audience were there only because they saw "The Show." Quite a few people sheepishly raised their hands resulting in a chuckle from LeRoy.

The photos are below. I hope you like them.

On a side note, during the month of April my photos will be on display in the Triple Door theater so if you find yourself in the neighborhood be sure to stop in and check them out! That all starts Thursday April 5. I'll be there from 5pm until 7pm that evening to kick it off and hope to see you there!
Motorhead, Megadeth, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil in KentFebruary 21 was a loud night in Kent, WA at the Showare Center. This was my first time shooting there and hopefully not the last. First of all, let me say that the arena is awesome! FREE PARKING for everyone! Are you kidding me? That sold me on the place alone. The staff was friendly and professional. There was mayhem and mullets everywhere you looked! The vibe was fun, upbeat and just plain awesome! Italian Goth/Metal band Lacuna Coil and Danish Metal band Volbeat killed it! Spot on performances with a very high level of intensity! Check out the Volbeat website to get an idea of what it was like there.

Next up was Motorhead! Lemmy is a legend in rock and roll there is no denying it. I've read he relates more to the punk scene than the metal scene. I say screw it, the music scene in general can relate to Lemmy. He plays hard and it was a dream come true to get to shoot him.

Megadeth closed out the night sounding better than ever! The last time I saw them play was at the Salem Armory in Oregon with Suicidal Tendencies sometime in the mid to late 80s. That was the first time I had to be pulled out of the pit by security as I remember I got knocked around pretty good in there. Now that I'm a bit overweight and pushing 40 (June 12...send cake) I decided to watch from the seats in back. Great stage, their stage presence carried all the way to the back of the room. It was great fun. I also learned recently that Dave Mustaine is a born again Christian which makes me like him even more! I hope to get to shoot them later in the year when they play with Rob Zombie!
This shot was taken at Oceanside. I thought I had left myself enough room between my tripod and the tide. I was wrong.

Mat Haywardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01642560352997810127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21117301.post-63599542884870789942012-02-12T14:04:00.002-08:002012-03-04T10:40:09.245-08:00James Mercer of the Shins End SessionOn Friday afternoon in anticipation of his new album Port of Morrow coming out on March 20, James Mercer of the Shins did a 5 song solo acoustic set at Red Hook Brewery for a small handful of lucky radio contest winners courtesy of 107.7 The End. Romanesco is a variation of cauliflower from Italy. It looks like it's from another planet. I brought it home to eat it and found myself compelled to get a bit artsy fartsy with it first. I broke out my new Elinchrome Snoot to light it and snapped off a few pics while the oven was pre-heating. Got the shots, chopped it up, baked it at 400 for around 20 minutes with some butter and garlic on top and voila! Then I broke out some Photoshop recipes to come up with these...

This years trip was no exception. Lea and I woke up the girls (and Hudson) at 4am and on the road we went. It was still dark at 7am when we arrived so we stopped in at the Eatery for one of their famous cinnamon rolls. As the sun came up so were the eagle counts. We probably saw around 40 all day making our rounds up and down the Highway. Well worth the trip and I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Let me start with a story...I told my wife Lea that I was shooting Florence and the Machine and she said "Who?" I said "Oh never mind, Head and the Heart is playing too." She said "Who?" "Oh forget it" I said. Then I said "Matt Kearney is playing too." She freaked out! "Oh my gosh I love Mat Kearney!" She screamed like my 12 year old niece talking about Justin Bieber. I had never seen her get excited about a musician I was shooting before.

That being said I felt added pressure to get some good shots of him :) Mat opened the show and was super entertaining. Charming, funny and a great repertoire of songs. Not only that but he spells his name with just one T like yours truly and he is from my home town of Eugene, OR. How can you not just love this guy?

Head and the Heart came out next for their last show of the year. It's been several months since I last photographed them and I can tell you with pure honesty that I was blown away by their evolution as a group. They were so much more well-rounded and polished with their stage presence. Before they seemed to be almost in disbelief that they had become so popular. They now seem to me to feel very comfortable in the spotlight but in a very humble way. I was very impressed with their performance and look forward to seeing them again.

Last but certainly not least was Florence and the Machine. I had shot Monday night, Tuesday night, all day Wednesday, while working my day job all week including Thursday and I am not too proud to admit I was tired! Florence came out and that was immediately forgotten. Halfway through her first song I almost dropped my camera in disbelief. My body was covered head to toe in goosebumps and I couldn't help but say "Wow!" over and over again. She has this ethereal presence about her and seemed to almost float across the stage. Her voice was powerful and strong yet beautiful and delicate simultaneously. I was awe-struck and continue to be. It was such a privilege to shoot that concert. I hope you like the photos.
WOW! The Show of the Year! 107.7 The End put together an unbelievable line up with Mumford and Sons, Death Cab for Cutie, Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema Club and Group Love!

Every band was amazing to say the least! I had full access to the venue and was fortunate to get set up in the KNDD blogger room right smack in the middle of all the artists dressing rooms. It was a surreal experience the entire day. Members of Mumford and Sons warming up in the hallway before their show, Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant was checking out pics on my computer right after his incredibly intense performance, Seattle Sounders star Kasey Keller was hanging out back there, GroupLove was loving every minute of it, singing songs and playing guitar.

Nothing short of an incredible experience!
If I had to describe in a nutshell my experience photographing Motley Crue those would be the words I would use.

EXCITING: Not long after I turned 11 years old Motley Crue released the album Shout at the Devil. Against my Mom's better wishes she let me buy the cassette and my life was never the same. I played that tape until the ribbon snapped then I bought another. I was rarely seen without my Motley Crue hat on until I was around 14. It was a borderline unhealthy obsession with a seriously bad ass band. Fast forward to 2011 and I'm presented with the opportunity to photograph their show at the Tacoma Dome on August 12. For the better part of the night I was backstage at a Motley Crue show walking amongst an army of busses. It appeared that each band member had his own bus in addition to a fleet of trucks for the massive stage they had set up. Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx were strolling around. Vince with the swagger and smirk that told a story of confidence after a lifetime of living the life that says all the chicks want to do me and all the dudes want to be me.

The bass player for the New York Dolls Kenny Aaronson was came by and grabbed my massive 400mm f/2.8L IS lens to check out the weight. He said it was heavier than his bass :) Myself and the other 4 photographers with credentials for the night were placed in a holding area where the EMT's were staged in preparation of the inevitable waterfall of vomit which we also got to witness. All in all it was very, very exciting to be there.

The New York Dolls opened the show to a shockingly empty Tacoma Dome. They have been playing for 40 years and pioneered the punk era. An iconic band to say the least but the crowd didn't seem to give a shit as they were milling about outside...what a wasted opportunity for them. Up next was Poison . What can be said about Poison that hasn't already been said. I was a fan of theirs as well back in the 80s so shooting them was a great bonus to the night. The two songs I saw were a bit on the cheesy side but lets be honest, it hasn't always been about the music with this band. The show itself is a big draw for many and they didn't disappoint. At the end of the 2nd song Brett Michaels took the microphone and in a scratchy voice apologized for being off-key. "Hey guys..sorry about my voice tonight..I tell ya, I've got one heck of a flu goin on here but I wouldn't have missed this show for the world!" I was reminded of his shamelessly honest and candid approach to playing Celebrity Apprentice and I must admit I really like the guy. My wife has her own Brett Michaels story from the 80s that I won't repeat here but I still like him :)

Up next was Motley Crue...They shuffled us photographers back in the dome at the last minute. While we were setting up the curtain dropped to a massive explosion of huge fireworks and the show had begun! Holy shit did I have to react and fast. The stage was enormous. Tommy Lee's drum kit was like nothing I have ever seen before. I only saw it on the ground and I was blown away...look at this video he has on his site to see what I missed! http://tommylee.com/tommy-lee-roller-coaster-drum-solo-video/. Nikki Sixx came out looking like a mad man with crazed makeup and fierce intensity. He is as good a photographer as he is a bass player...check out his art here...http://nsixxfoto.tumblr.com/. Mick Mars was a freaky dude in the 80s...he has taken it to a new level in my opinion. I grabbed a couple shots of him during the show that when I saw them I wasn't entirely convince I wasn't looking at a ghost. Vince Neil is Vince Neil. That's all that really needs to be said. As I wrote before, he has a certain swagger about him and a contagious smile that I would imagine comes from being adored by millions of fans for over 3 decades. I remember knowing girls that were so in love with Vince Neil back in the big hair days that all I had to do was play a Crue tape and they were start taking their clothes off for me. Hey Vince if you are reading this...Thanks! :)

THE FRUSTRATING: When I received my credentials it was confirmed that I would only be allowed to shoot from the sound board and would only get to shoot 2 songs. Typically when I shoot a show I'm given a minimum of 3 songs and am allowed to get right up next to the stage. They had an escort walk us to the sound board just before the show began. We found ourselves standing on the floor about 125 yards back from the stage and directly behind every fan with floor seating. Of course nobody was going to be sitting down so to even catch a glimpse of a band member was based on pure luck. It was as if they didn't want us to get any photos. Fortunately, I had a very long lens with me as I heard stories from photographers that had shot previous shows. For the New York Dolls it was no problem because as I mentioned, the venue was not very full. For Poison it was the worst. After the two songs they wouldn't allow us to stay and watch the show so myself and the other photogs went to a nearby restaurant for a quick beer and a bite. I borrowed a milk crate from them to stand on during Motley Crue's performance and that saved my ass big time. After the show we were required to remove our photo passes and return them. They had the date of the show and the magazine I was shooting for written in sharpie so clearly they were going to the garbage. I'm not sure why we couldn't keep them and was pretty bummed as those are great souvenirs from shows. In addition, we were given very strict orders to not even think about taking a photo backstage. If we did we would be banned from shooting the Tacoma Dome for life. I was told that was Brittney Spears fault but whatever. It sucked because there were some great photo ops back there. So our two songs came and went very fast. When I got back I asked to leave my camera gear in the security room so I could watch the rest of the show...can't watch the show they said...I said I would buy a ticket...nope. Can't do that either. Don't go away mad, just go away was the message I was hearing loud and clear.

HUMILIATING: This will fall under the category of too much information. I had to work all day in a suit. I didn't want to shoot Motley Crue in a suit so I meant to bring a shirt. Forgot it. I went to Macys in the morning and bought one. Didn't try it on. I put it on after work and realized it looked ridiculous. No problem I thought. I had my under armor spandex looking t-shirt under it. I'll just wear that in the venue and buy a Motley Crue T-shirt while I'm in the show. Worst case scenario, I'll be in the dark concert hall..not a big deal. If you don't know me, I haven't been to the gym in...well, I've never been to the gym. It ain't pretty if you know what I'm saying. Well, no venue access...no t-shirts buyin...no dark venue for any length of time...bright lit, backstage hanging out with a million people who had to have been wondering what kind of delusional person I must be to think I could get away with wearing that thing. Oh man, I cringe just thinking about it.

Now for the pics :)

Nikki Sixx looking like a crazed bad ass.

A couple months ago the day before their CD was releases I met them at Sedro Wooley for a portrait session. Both Ethan and Joel are very nice, very down to Earth guys and it was a pleasure to spend the afternoon taking their photographs.

Not long after that I saw them perform at the Tractor Tavern and I saw a whole new side of them. These guys are intense performers with a diverse mix of songs ranging from hard rock to bluesy/moody tunes. The entire CD is great and I highly recommend you click the above link and buy it. I'm telling you, these guys are going to explode on the scene and you had better remember you read it here first! :)

They opened the Main Stage at the Capitol Hill Block Party on Sunday and they were natural on the big stage. See the post below this one for more on that day. All said and done they played four different shows on Sunday including an End Session for 107.7 The End.
Instead it's a massive festival loaded with booze and food and great music! Thousands of people crowd the streets to take in the scene. There are many places to watch bands play with the main stage featuring a select few bands.

It's a 3 day event but I was only able to make it for the final day on Sunday. This worked out for me because one of my favorite bands My Goodness opened the day on the Main stage with a killer performance.

Following My Goodness was the Posies high flying, spit filled, intense performance.

Later the Battles took the stage and performed what I was later told was called "Math Rock." Their My Space Page classifies them as experimental/Fusion Rock. Either way, they were awesome. With Ian Williams playing two keyboards and a guitar simultaneously, John Stanier destroying the drums and Dave Konopka keeping it cool on the Bass their timing was flawless and the music was amazing.

I went off to shoot the End Session featuring My Goodness came back to catch Explosions in the Sky who closed out the event with rhythmic music that had the crowd rising and falling at it's whim.

It was my first time at the Capitol Hill Block Party but definitely not my last!

One thing I forgot to bring was extra Sunscreen!

Ethan and Joel of My Goodness on the Main Stage. Countless costumes, countless classics, constant entertainment! Fee Waybill was the ultimate gentleman outside the show when we met and the ultimate bad boy on stage. Maybe my favorite moment of the night was him calling a guy out saying "There's nothing like watching some dude eat noodles and text messaging while I'm singing a fucking song." Ouch.

Many classic hits were played like White Punks on Dope and She's a Beauty

There were some props I probably shouldn't talk about in the blog but you can see in some of the pics below. One of my favorite photography techniques is to paint with light. Basically you set up a long exposure and use a flashlight to "paint" your subject with light were you want your subject to be illuminated. Maybe one of the coolest concert moments ever: The lights went out so Fee grabbed a flashlight and painted himself with light. He was wearing a spiked leather thong and mask and I'm pretty sure nothing else at the time. Rock and Roll!

Decades before Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga were wearing outrageous costumes and creating art on stage, the Tubes were laying the foundation for shock rock at it's finest! Here are a few of my favorite pics from the night. I hope you like them.

The Dropkick Murphys took the stage at one of my favorite venues in Seattle the Paramount Theater. Some of you may not recognize them by name but the moment you hear one note from "I'm shipping up to Boston" you'll immediately go back to the last time you watched the movie The Departed.

I was taken back to my punk rock days at this show. The first three songs I was enabled to photograph came and went really fast so I made my way to the balcony to watch more of the show. From up there, I could see the pace was fast and the pit was fierce! It looked pretty aggressive so I wisely chose to get into it as thick as I could. There I was reminded that while intense mosh pits can be aggressive and perceived as violent there is also a sense of brotherhood. I made my way to the outer rim of the pit with my gear and almost immediately a guy was shoved to the ground at my feet. Before I could react, 3 guys were on him, scooped him up, shoved him back into the action and went about their merry way.

As for the band...they were fast, they were loud, they were intense and for lack of a better word...they were awesome. I was told they'd take the stage at 9:30 and almost to the second the curtain dropped and from moment #1 it was on!

There were less than 20 radio contest winners in the crowd. At one point the band literally asked the audience if they like it because they couldn't tell. It was a bit awkward but really a cool opportunity to see a very popular band in such an intimate setting. Here are a few pics from the show.
You can't go wrong with that combination.

Sexy, mesmerizing, charming, funny, provocative, witty, energetic, charismatic, shocking, outrageous, fun, stimulating, GREAT! Just a few adjectives I can think of to describe the burlesque show playing at the Triple Door this weekend. The show is produced by Lily Verlaine who shares choreographic credit and the general vision of the show with Kitten LaRue and Olivier Wevers.

Eye candy at every turn this show is one of the most entertaining burlesque shows I have seen. I believe tickets are still available for tonight and tomorrow night so if you don't already have plans call the box office right now!

If you've never been to the Triple Door to see a show there isn't a bad seat in the house. The food is nothing short of incredible and there is a wine list that I would challenge any other restaurant in the Northwest to rival. Tell them Mat sent you!

Politically he and I disagree in most ways but I can't help but admire his passion and his articulate method of making a point. He is in your face, he is well-read, very intelligent and very opinionated. He would be about the last person on planet Earth that I would want to debate but dang it's fun to watch him go off.
These guys are iconic legends. They kicked off their 2011 tour in Seattle at the Moore Theater. This was the first time I had seen them live and I really hope not the last. Non-stop energy, excitement, silliness, costumes and genuine fun is the best way I can describe the show.

I'm going to try to catch up over the next couple of weeks..

Back in January, 2011 rock bands Hugo and Cage the Elephant performed to a very limited number of invited guests of 107.7 The End at the EMP. I've been to most if not all the End Sessions over the past year and a half or so and I would have to say this one was my favorite.

Hugo performed a several of their songs including their hit 99 Problems (and the bitch ain't one). The sound was tight and they were very entertaining.
After their performance I had to run backstage to upload my photos before Cage the Elephant took the stage. There was a man and woman sitting in front of my computer playing Connect 4. The board was nearly full and the girl won the game. The started over and she beat him much quicker. "Dang dude, she is kicking your ass!" I told him as my pics started to load. I ran back out to get my spot at the stage in time for the Cage the Elephant performance. Moments later the Connect 4 guy took the stage and I realized he was the lead singer Matt Shultz! Backstage, Matt was very mellow and low key. The second he grabbed the microphone it was on! The dude can seriously rock! He very much reminded me of Kurt Cobaine in both his appearance and his uninhibited stage presence. I was blown away and ever since the show I've become a big fan. Their newest CD Thank You Happy Birthday is a lot rowdier than their single Shake Me Down had originally lead me to believe it would be but I like it...a lot. Kind of a Butthole Surfers/Suicidal Tendencies vibe to a lot of the tunes and each is diverse. It seems hard to put Cage in any one category so don't even try.
